Tyrolean Storm update

Tyrolean Storm update

Postby Jeremy » Sun Sep 02, 2012 8:43 pm

Hello all.

A quick update now I have the boat safely at BBYC after a fantastic sail down from Pittwater last Monday...

I completed the structural fibreglass repair on the bow today, the bow fitting and pullpit have been removed and the bow fitting (roller assembly) needs to be realigned and rewelded as it was bent presumably at the same time the hull/deck join was damaged. Most deck fittings on the cabin top have been removed. I have also fixed a hole in the foredeck for one of the pullpit mounts.

I intend to remove the mast next weekend if all goes to plan. If not the mast then I will reseal all the stantions and hopefully put the bow fitting back on.

I also found that the depth sounder, saloon lights and both radios (am/fm, vhf) work.

All in all a successful weekend.

Cheers

Wow, you have managed to complete a heap of repair in a weekend. Well done!

How far did you sail her? I am not familiar with Sydney.

Do you have the boat out of the water? Any pics of before and after? : ).

Thanks for the reply troppo.

It was 50nm mooring to mooring, very easily motor sailed. We did it in about 10 hrs, i think the current helped a lot though.

I havent had her out of the water yet, but i dived her and i can say that the hull has no identifiable osmosis. I have a few pics i will try to post tomorrow.

Tonight i just fitted led nav lights to the removed pullpit and bought a battery (looks great lighting up the living room!). I will install the pullpit and electrics and hook up a temporary solar panel on the weekend.

Great to hear of your restoration work, I hate the modern throw-away society! WRT osmosis, you won't spot it by diving. Need to sight along the hull in the air, with the light shining along it, and then you can see the bumps. Not the end of the world, can dig them out and fill with epoxy. Just needs a low cost slip and good weather.

True Ian, the ossy I am concerned about is delamination of a layer (many dinner place size blisters!), as found in some compass 28s and marauders.

Will upload some pics of the boat pre repairs as soon as the forum allows me to.

Jeremy, I hope you wont find any dinner plate sized blisters on your TH. If it is any consolation, my old Bluebird was built at the same time by the same builders, and it had lots of little blisters, but after treatment was stable for the next 10 years that I had the boat.

Photos work!

Ian, I'm sure all will be fine, what I was trying to say is that only plate sized osmosis worries me.

Jeremy, I was getting all excited thinking that another TH was coming south to the BBYC (Batemans Bay Yacht Club), until I read further. Obviously not. Where is your BBYC?

She looks beaut! ( Mind you, I am a little biased about the clean lines of the Mk11). Great to see her in loving hands again.

Hope to catch up on the water some time.

Cheers,
Mark
