Mast step replacement

I have attached a photo of my mast step. As you can see, it's quite corroded.

Just wondering;

1/ How badly corroded does it have to be to replace it?
2/ What does it cost to have it done?
3/ Is this one badly corroded or is there life in it yet?

Any thoughts appreciated as always.

Hi Bruce, is that a crack along the bottom of the mast step?

My concern from the pic is that the base of the mast step is basically not connected to the side walls. If that is the case, then the mast step is seriously weakened. My concern is not really the amount of rust but how much structural strength has been lost. If the base is separating from the walls then in my opinion, time to fix it or change it.

I know nothing about replacements.

Good question Troppo, not sure. It has had 'Cold Gal' on it to try to slow the progress of the corrosion and what looks like a crack might be flaking. Will have a closer look next next.

Don't think I have noticed any serious cracking. Another wider angle photo attached.

I clean my mast step up every year and treat the rust. I suggest you cut the rust back, treat it with rust converter and seal it. I have found penetrol aluminum the longest lasting coating. I use a few coats of penetrol and then paint over it with marine enamel. My mast step is still structurally sound but the rust is a pain.

I may replace the mast step next time I get the standing rigging replaced. My rigger said it would probably cost $1500 to $2000 to replace it with an aluminum mast step (supply and fit). He thought I could put it off for another decade but I might flick it before this. He had also replaced them with stainless, but he thought that aluminum was a better choice ( lighter, lasts forever and less chance of galvanic action with the mast).
