What do you hang ya outboard on?

What do you hang ya outboard on?

Postby Troppo » Mon Jul 16, 2012 4:06 pm

I am thinking about putting the outboard over the stern to give more room in the cockpit and to gain a little extra distance from the noise. Currently, my 18 hp Tohatsu 2 stroke outboard sits in the well (which was enlarged by PO to fit the big outboard). Also tossing up about downsizing to a 10 hp as the 18 hp is quite a bit of weight to work with.

What sort of brackets do folks use for their out-the-back outboards? Do the mountings get reinforced? Good and bad experiences with the stern mounts?

Troppo, it's really important to re-inforce the inside of the transom if you're hanging over the back, but before you drill the holes, and start the job, you radially should see if It's going to work for you first, because it's a lot of work if you hate either the way it works or the look.

This is the one I have. https://www.whitworths.com.au/main_item ... tor%20brac

I don't have any remote control stuff yet, but it works for me.

Thank you, Michael. That one on Whitworths website looks a good heavy duty one and liftable. When coming up the coast, I saw a TH at Scarborough on the hard that was being renovated and a solid looking custom made ss pipe one had just been installed. It didn't have any kind of lifter on it so I am thinking there must be a variety of transom systems out there.

If I outboard the outboard, I would certainly reinforce the transom. Perhaps I should use the outboard well AND a mount way out the back, fit dual 6 hp motors. Or 2x 15 hp. What speed do Th's get up onto the plane?

Nah, just tossing around ideas to see what might work well for Windchaser and the way I will be using her.

18HP, ,,,,,,,, do you water ski behind that? (takin da pizz) I spent all last weekend up in the transom and it looks like I'll be there again this weekend. It's not a nice place to work expecially with that outboard well taking up all the room. I had to shuffle in with my arms above my head so I could work. I wouldn't like to be trying to glass in blocking thats for sure. Good luck with that, I'll be reading on with intrest ol Troppo.

Rob, r u having a go at me? I go boating solo so there is no way I can operate the boat while being out the back on skis! Tractor tube bouncing on waves is a diferent matter, I set autopilot climb back on the rope ladder and just hang onto the tube. Towards the end of the straight I crawl back up and turn the boat around. Way easier than skiing.

The motor came with the boat and is a beauty. Just I suspect I am not gunna get the best out of it and something smaller would be more suitable. It is a hard lift getting it up out of the well. Lucky all that tractor-tubing has strengthened my arm muscles.

Ahh, Rob, your mention of how you worked on the transom is very motivating to me. Yup, motivating me to work on some more easily accessible part of the boat.

What work ya doing on the transom Rob?

I am not sure why I am thinking about the outboard arrangement, my repair/reno project-management list is a total mess so be a while before I get to doing anything. My orderly approach is in tatters. I have not properly finished even one of the jobs I started, other more urgent things get in the way. My best effort so far has been the antifouling though I class that as unfinished as I still have to antifoul the rudder (which I need to repair first and put back on but raining again so more wait to get it really dry). Not to worry, I actually am enjoying seeing the bits getting done as the big picture shows that progress is being made even if specific areas are being started then left.

Rob, be very careful working in confined space with resins. I was once in a similar position in my Bluebird (another Form-it F/G masterpiece), glassing in a bulkhead. Head down the coffin berth, holding a tub of epoxy resin, which suddenly started to get rather hot. I wriggled out backwards as fast as I could, and just as I got my head out of the tunnel, the tub burst into flames! I jumped on deck and threw it overboard. It was a very close call, not to be recommended.
