Yeah ! I believe that to be correct too , I replaced all the nuts on Egret II's chainplates 10 years ago and haven't had a problem since. The original nuts had corroded but the "U" bolts themselves are fine still even after 38 years !

Re: U bolts

Rob,
I have the old U-bolts for the lowers and uppers for my Mk11(they look in perfect condition to me). I also have 2 specially made heavy duty chainplates made for the backstay that were not used on my boat when the other chain plates were replaced with heavy duty plates. Which unbolts do you need to replace? Do you want me to measure them up to see if they are the correct size for your Mk3?

Cheers,
Mark

yes thanks Mark I need 2 for the lowers and one for the upper and I'll also take those HD rear chain plats off you as well if you don't need them. My V bolts are 52mm and 102mm centre to centre on the bolts.
just let me know how much you want for them and I'll E.F.T you if you like. I'm at rob.lovelace@yahoo.com regards Rob

Rob,

Looks like they are the right size Rob. I will hang onto the HD backstay plates as I am due to replace my standing rigging in 2014 and I will propably put them on Storm Petrel to match the ones I have on the shrouds. I will email you so we can organize how to get the u-bolts down to you.

Cheers,
Mark

I replaced 6 chainplates on Night Cap (2 for backstay bridle and the 4 for the lower stays). not all needed to be replaced, but I did them anyway. Got them from Blackwoods on line and they delivered to my door in a few days. Cheap as chips. They have 316 and 304. They are rounded, not triangular as per the originals. I bent them to match the angle to accomodate the line of the stays and distance between centres was spot on. i think they came with nuts, but did not have backing plates, so I used the old ones. Could not find any off the shelf u-bolts to replace the larger ones used for the cap stays, but they were good. Some of the old u- bolts were badly corroded (nuts in many cases were stuffed).
In all cases where corrosion was an issues, water had leaked in from the deck.
