Standing Rig wire sizes & mode of termaination

Hi Topi,
The Nicopress are ok with 7x19 because of the surface texture they swage into ie much more little cavities to give the grip needed to exceed the breaking value of the cable.
If you use that system on 1x19 it will fail (cable will slip out) before the cable will break.
The original Top Hat had 3/4" gal 1x19 but that is a circumference measurement so equal to about 1/4" diameter. Gal is not as strong as S/S and the original was for off shore use.
Many Top Hats are rigged 3/16" S/S but that is not for off shore.
I rigged with 7/32" S/S which is probably overkill for the shrouds but about right for the stays.
White Tie was rigged with that size for the Trans Tasman in "78 and she stood up ok!
Cheers,
Tom

For the younger Top Hater's,

3/16" = 4.76 mm

7/32" = 5.55 mm

So I have Seaka rig for offshore. Seem to remember the previous owner mentioning something about that.

From the Ronstan web site,

3/16" breaking 1x19 1930kg
7/32" breaking 1x19 2470kg
6mm breaking 7x19 2039kg
7mm breaking 7x19 2784kg

Illingworth's rule of thumb for shrouds was 2 times ballast so at 1234kg for MkII and MkIII 7/32" 1x19 looks ok (off shore again).

Cheers,

Tom

Marinka was 7/32 in and rigged for offshore with very strong attachment points. Can't believe she did not sell as a good boat with good fresh water cooled Nani diesel with low hours on her and good sails etc. Cheers Peter

I don't know why it didn't sell either Peter.
There is a fellow at the 16s that is looking for a good Top Hat and I recommended it to him.
Here's hoping.

Peter,

I'm also lost as to why you didn't sell.

Even that cheap ebay job will cost the same as yours once it's brought up to Marinka's standard. :?

And there's no work to do on Marinka!

Hi Phil - turns out Marinka did sell last week and someone is going to be very happy with her. I don't have any other details at this stage. Hope all is well with the Top hatters on the Lake and at Laurieton. both great spots. I ahve been doing lots of renos to my Rival 34 - new hard dodger, new galley etc etc. Solar panels electrics etc. Good stuff. Cheers Peter

Good on you Peter,

Might see you next year as I go pass. We should keep in touch in the mean time.

7/32 looks like the go.

Anyone know of swageless fittings at a reasonable price (that rules out Sta-Loc), there seems to be plenty available OS, but not on the Oz market. The only reasonable ones that I found came via Bridgco, but upon closer look at the info, they are not of yacht rigging.

Even though I subscribed to this posting, I have not received any notifications ? Get them on other topics but not this one ?

Hi Topi,
http://www.bluewaveaus.com/
Look on the resources heading, download catalogue.
Phone 07 5593 8178
I plan to go this way when next I re-rig.
There was a test on the web comparing to Sta-loc which it bested.
Cheers,
Tom
