I agree Bill, best to run with the boom vanged to the mast base and a preventer running to a block on the bow and back to the cockpit where you can release it quickly if needed, while still having the vang hard on.

Thanks all for the responses.
I will take the middle way-set up a second main-sheet on the existing (and unused) traveler (as in Bear's pic) while keeping the cabin top option available.
I'll run preventer from the bow and;
Set up the down haul.
And put an alternative hand-hold
The strange thing about owning a vessel of this vintage is finding the various modifications. Some of the recent wiring has been done using the tinned wire and solder on all joints while other bits are speaker-wire and electrical tape. And then there is good quality fittings attached with self-tappers...etc
Anyway, that my weekend job list-I'll report back
