piston hanks

Can anyone who has a hank on storm jib please tell me the size hanks on the sail (alternatively the overall length of the hanks). Also if anyone knows where I can buy piston hanks.

Whitworths only seem to have plastic ones which are not the best for a storm sail.

See a sailmaker, but get the big ones because when you want to put that sail on you may be struggling with waves and wind.

Your sailmaker may have to put them on anyway. Last lot I got were brass/bronze [?] but large enought to grab with wet cold fingers.

Diameter size of your forestay is needed to ensure they will go on!

I am going out to Seaka on Saturday if you need a size or a photo.

The bronze snap hook type, rather than piston hanks, are recommended for storm jibs, as you can clip them on with one hand, whilst the other is hanging on for dear life!

This is a photo of hanks clipped onto the sail.
There are larger size hanks than that shown below.
There is also another version, with a ring instead of the clip, that is sown onto the sail.

Thanks Phillip, those look like number 1 hanks (50mm overall length). That is the same as I have on my genoa. Good to know no 1 hanks used on storm jib, as some Whitworths stores carry them. The storm jib I am refurbishing had 3 inch piston hanks. I would like to try some Wichard snap hooks, if I could find them.
