12V Electrics - keeping it simple

Postby Rod » Sat Jan 12, 2013 11:00 am

Hi,
I don't have an "electrical" bone in my body but would like to have my TH wired up to include my two solar panels, mounted off port/stbd stern, through regulator and isolator switch to two separatly stored 12V batteries, mounted on opposite sides of boat. I have also purchased a NASA BM-1 monitoring system to include. I run a 6HP o/b with charger so do not need to keep a battery charged for starting a diesel.
I do have a small Honda 4 stroke EU101 generator.
I use a handheld VHF with spare batteries and charger.
I use a handheld Holux chartplotter with same software on smartfone + spare battery.
I use a Navman depth sounder fixed on boat.

I would like to find a website to explain to non electrical people like myself the advantages of different setups etc. I would like to be able to charge the holux/fone from cigarette lighter rather than having to start the generator, if that's a reasonable request. Too much text trying to explain these technical matters confuses rather than explains things, pictures much better.

Hi Rod, I don't know any websites that might help [I am sure there are many out there : )] but your suggestion of charging up your smaller items via cigarette lighter socket is a good one. It's worked for me for years. While some of my friends will charge their phones and cameras etc via an inverter on 12 v (giving them 240 v) I prefer to buy a straight 12 volt charger as it is more energy efficient. Some of the chargers I had to source from Hong Kong via Ebay as they were not available in Australia. I also have a handy 12v charger for AA batteries and so have hand-held UHF and lights that use them. Oh, my 'netbook has a 12v charger and being smaller than a laptop does not draw much from the boat battery. So, my cigarette lighter socket gets a workout but has proven handy for me. Should be fine for your stuff.
