Washboards reno

Postby Troppo » Tue Nov 20, 2012 9:37 am

The washboards were breaking apart and who knows how long ago it was varnished as the remains were only a spinkling of dust. I took the boards home and after sanding one piece, the smallest one, decided to repair rather than replace.

After sanding and power wire brushing the front, I put on several layers of clear Bote-Cote epoxy and 3 of Aquacote clear. Also reglued the various broken, cracked and falling-off timbers.

In this pic, I have not added the louvre vent but you can see the difference between old in the pic above and new.

The back of the washboards, the bit I look at when anchored and it is raining hard enough for me to put the boards in, looks totally different. The wood has an amazing colour and I used no stain. I think it is so much better to look at than the way it was.

It is no expert job but it is now repaired and is much nicer than before. The clear Aquacote over the epoxy is supposed to last 3 years so I am interested to see how it does.

Ned Kelly? Well actually, that peep hole is so when ya inside and there is a 'tap-tap-tap' on the door, you can look through and if it's a croc wanting to come in for dinner then ya don't open up.
