rig tension

rig tension

Im sure the topic has already been covered but my searches have failed.

I would like to know the manufacturers rig tension specs.

I'm starting of with 15% on the cap shrouds and backstay.

I've read that the backstay should be less than the head stay but I haven't had much conformation on backstay tension.

I am going to set it at 15% and mark the backstay tensioner at 30% if that's achievable.

25-50mm mast bend using the fwd lowers and just take the slack out of the rear lowers.

Hi Rob,

Try

viewtopic.php?f=6&t=225&p=471#p471

Unless your sails are cut for a bent mast, keep it straight mate!

The backstay has lower tension because it is a bigger angle (mounts further away) than the forestay.

Cheers,

Tom

Hi Tom, how's the Fleming going?

yeah I've read what's on that thread on the web but it only says the back stay has less tension than the forestay. It doesn't say how much less. I can't tension the forestay as the furler is there so what I need is a percentage of breaking strain on the backstay.

I found this a good resource for setting up and tuning- it is not really selden specific at all- i found it from a Nigel CValder recommendation in one of his articles... http://www.riggingandsails.com/pdf/selden-tuning.pdf

Rod,

I measured my forestay (470kg) and backstay (420kg).

Cheers,

Tom
