Can anyone provide details on how to use s spit link to join 2 chains. Is it best to hammer the opening closed or squeeze the split link in a vice??
Vice job means bringing the 2 lengths home. Anyways, hammering the two together would best be done on shore, using 2 BIG hammers.

Rule of thumb is to hammer the joining link together and if possible weld or braze the join on the link.
