electrical wires in mast

electrical wires in mast

Postby Killick69 » Tue Nov 01, 2011 6:39 am

The mast rebuild is progressing slowly and I was wondering if anyone knows of a way to secure electrical wiring in mast so as to prevent clanging when the boat rocks on the mooring/at anchor.

Finally managed to remove the mast foot from the step (harbour bridge). It was well and truly stuck. The foot is somewhat corroded (so hopefuly can get anew one or manage to clean the old one up OK) Now to get the harbour bridge sandblasted.

If I placed the mast step back on the boat, there would be a gap about half an inch high and about 6 inches across running along the centre line of the boat. This gap was filled on front and rear of mast step with some hard white compound, which looks like Plaster of Paris (it broke into pieces when I tried to remove it from the mast step). Anyone know what it is? I am thinking of re-bedding the mast step using SIkaflex and possible filling this gap with Sikaflex (can't think of another way as yet).
Cheers, John

John, can't help you with the sealing of the step.

Usually the wires inside the mast are held tight against the inside with a small conduit. I have the same problem and will be getting conduit put in when I have the rigging done soon. Apparently they run the conduit up the inside, and secure it in a couple of places so it doesn't clang.

Cheers,

Piece of piss ! 3/4 conduit pop riveted every 600 mm
How ? This is the piece of piss bit ! cut a piece of ply to fit up your mast ,cut a groove so the conduit fits loosely in the groove . Screw a stick (along one )to the plywood so as you slide it up ,it pushes the conduit against the mast, easy eh ??

HINT : On the stick mark 600 intervals eg; 600mm ,1200mm ,1800 mm etc this way you will know where to drill the hole close to the plywood holding the conduit close to the side of the mast .

TIP #2 : If you hit the bolt holding your spreaders on ? come in from the other end !!! :lol:

Re gap under harbour bridge ;
It should be a solid base so the weight is spread evenly over the surface of the base plate on the harbour bridge .Maybe use a fibreglass putty and while the putty is soft push the bridge into place .put some glad wrap or similar between the bridge and the putty so it doesn't stick to the bridge this way you can lift it off when it sets and play with it to get a good fit .
Cheers Bear :D
