Symmetrical kite for an asymmetrical

Evening All,
I'm restarting this discussion here.

“I'm investigating changing our symmetrical kite for an asymmetrical, just to make it easier to fly, because we never use the kite as it is. Michael Miker “

I intend to use my Symmetrical Kite as an asymmetrical kite. I have a short halyard of about 1.5m so the kite will clear the pushpit. I did look at getting it re-cut but our local sail maker quoted about $500, so will try this way using it like a big Genoa. I will run the halyards back to pulleys on each side of the pushpit at the stern. Using it this way I hope to get rid of the 3m spinnaker pole.

For those that are unfamiliar, attached is a pic of Auriga with her MPS (asym spinnaker) up.

Phillip, not sure how well your kite will hold given the difference in shape of the sail, but cant hurt to try.

I have just got a sail maker to tidy up a big old asymmetric that came with my boat(I have not used it yet). I was interested to see that you are flying yours inside the pulpit. I was thinking of rigging a temporary bowsprit to take mine outside the pulpit but if it works OK flying it inside that could be a simpler option. How do you find it? How strong a breeze can you fly it in and what apparent wind angles does it work best in??

Cheers,
Mark

If you check the websites of sailmakers who sell asym or MPG sails, the suggest using an adjustable tack line from a small block attached near the bow roller. This way you can let the tack up higher above the pulpit and bring it down when you go closer to the wind.

The addition of a sock looks the goods too.

Let us know how youu go flying your standard spinaker Phillip.
