Good Evening All, and a Happy New year.

I sold my Top Hat just before Christmas, but the new owners are local and very friendly, so I may be invited for the occasional sail on my beloved Prelude.

A question. Prelude sails much better on Port than on Starboard tack. I cannot understand why this should be the case. Has anyone else experienced this asymmetry in performance? Prelude lists slightly to port, because of the cockpit and cabin locker space. The log (speed) transducer is located on port. Any solutions?

Cheers
Cyril

Have to check with the GPS but Tales has a log on the Starboard side and indicates a good knot faster on a Starboard tack!

Ok, I have now measured the indicated speed on Tales on each tack against the GPS.
GPS 5knots = 5.3 knots indicated on Starboard tack
GPS 5knots = 4.7 knots indicated on Port tack.
The closer the mast to vertical, the closer the indicated speed to GPS measured speed ie motoring or running down wind.

G'day Tom,

Factors to consider: are you pushing a current on one tack?
Is there a sea that is slowing you down on one tack?
Are you pinching in to the wind too much on one tack and slowing the boat?

If all is equal,
Check that the rigging is the same tension on both side shrouds and lowers.
Check and measure fairlead position as this will openm or close the slot and
thus effect the boat speed.
You also might find you sail better on one tack than the other. This is
also not an unusual thiing to occur. But on a Top Hat sailing upwind with
accurate speed is critical to not pinching and maintaining boat speed above
all things.
