I am looking for a long shaft outboard for my Top Hat 25. The existing motor is a heavy 8HP and I want something lighter that I can manage more easily without having to Buff up !
Cosmetics are not important, but prefer a working unit.

I use a 5 h.p. long shaft Yamaha off my transom but have been underpowered in strong currents. Consider a swap?

At first I considered posting the add as "swap". But, I want to fix the 8Hp engine first & give it a good try out before passing it on. It seems to be running on one cylinder. Fixing it is on my short list of things to do.
The only local points where we get strong currents is coming under Captain Cook Bridge against a strong tidal flow, and a shallow spot between Towra and Sans Souci that also gets a strong tidal flow. The E26 used to just make it with a 6HP.

Still looking for a lighter long shaft. I may consider swapping for a 5 or 6 HP so long as it is under 30kg in weight.
The 8HP that I have did a good job of powering Topi down from Sydney harbour to BB. Just too heavy for the lower back to repeat the heaving it in and out of the cabin.
I like the power of the 8hp, but the reality is that the TH will get a lot less used if I can not heave the motor around. In the end sailing is the main aim and speed is not important, though getting under Captain Cook bridge against the tide is a challenge at times.

Topi i use a 3.5 long shaft Tohatsu on my Compass 28 as her main engine it pushes her at 4knts in good conditions is easy to lift and is used on the tender . of course i sail just about everywhere but it has got me across bars as they say a good sailor picks his tides they are a tough motor last forever

3.5hp long shaft great value buy brand new as most small outboards have been under plus the compass 28 is quite a bit heavier so it should do even better.

Tip, I know it spoiled the lines of the boat, but I have my 8hp over the back o a lifting bracket. It stays there, locked to the bracket all the time. It only. Comes off the boat if I take it home for a service.
It's also a standard shaft tohatsu 4 stroke, so it does cavitate a little on steep chop, but I've run out of Brisbane Water and Lake Macquarie against the tide with no issues. I also motored for 6 hours in a 2 metre swell when the wind died out on the way back from Lake Mac once. I get 6 knots at least on 3/4 throttle.
The only real slight difficulty is that I don't have morse controls, so I still have to reach over the back for gears and throttle, but I've been doing it that long now I'm used to it.
Having said that, get in touch with Sea Lady, she has invented a lifting system using the boom that lifts her outboard from the cabin into the well using a set of pulleys and she can do it on her own, I believe.
