I did a similar thing on my outboard (in the well) as the exhaust relief port was gassing us on downwind and even into wind continuous running.

Just tapped the hole (4mm from memory) and screwed in a plug.

I used to remove the plug for starting but have not done so for about 3 years now and it's no problem to start.
