Hi All,

I am considering getting a new mainsail and was wondering if anyone is interested in combining purchasing power...

I am yet to get a quote but was considering Rolly Taskers in Thailand... last time I did this for a different boat they were a lot cheaper and I think provided a better sail... than the local rip off merchants - (I know there are some good ones in Oz - and I like keeping jobs in the country but most of them are a bit greedy.)

Sail Lofts like it if they can run a few of the same designs at the same time as it allows for certain efficiencies and economies so if anyone is serious about upgrading in the new year feel free to drop me a line.

Fair winds

Karl

Hi Carl I have just had a new genoa made by the same guy who made the original sails for my Mark 1. (In case anyone wonders, no I haven't owned my Top Hat all that time, just the last two an a half years.) I got the sail-makers name off the old sails, Keith Brown, formerly of Gladesville, now at Motlake. I think it was his son who cut the sails but Keith is still there at the sewing machine after all these years. I think it's a 150% and the price was $1250 including luff pads. I don't know if this was a good price or not as I didn't bother shopping around. Maybe someone can comment? However, the reason I mention it is that due to an error in measurement the sail did not fit, the luff was too long. But I only discovered this when I was winching the sail up the last few inches on the furler. Also, because heavier cloth had been used compared to the old sail it was a very tight fit in the luff grove. My old furler works OK but it is a bugger to get the sail backwards though the feeder and the result was that the cloth tore in two places getting it out of the grove. (no wind getting it up but heaps of wind getting it down) I returned the sail and they shortened it, replaced the cloth for the entire length of the luff and replaced the luff rope with a slightly smaller size. No charge of course. The thing is, I only took the sail back today and it was ready two hours later! You can't get much better service than that. Depending on price, It may be something to consider when ordering sails from outside Australia. Cheers Keith
