I just had my old girl done by Phill Bate at Riggtech. It was a little more pricey than I expected, but fast, accurate and no hassles at all.

He actually takes the mast to a workshop nearby and works on it on a bench. In my case I asked for other work to be done, including a wiring conduit in the mast, new antenna and topping lift sheave.

The other thing I found was he didn't try to frighten me like a couple of others did. Remember too, the cost of a rig is apportioned over 10 - 15 years.

Cost of the rig is apportioned over 7-10 years.

That is what the insurance people and the riggers have told me.

And how much is your safety worth?

If your mast falls down and you are in protected waters then you probably only have a relatively short swim.

A different story if it falls down and you a 10 nautical miles out to sea.

Lots of swearing and the top of a mast swinging from a rope is not my idea of fun, but it cost me $140 for the lot including the cost of a bosuns chair!
