I thought there were other threads dealing with this issue but I can't find them.

I am looking for an Insurer that will accept an out of water survey conducted in February 2010 for comprehensive insurance. I'm currently with GIO, but they are hassling me for another out of water survey.

Any suggestions?

Hi Bruce,

I am with Club Marine.

They asked me for a new survey last year saying that they require each boat over 20 years of age to have a survey every 5 years.

There was an article in Cruising Helmsman a few months ago about insurance too. I can try to find it if you like.

I am interested to hear how you get on.

However, here is a repeat of my input on the subject from that page and all I will say to you in addition to the extract is - Do yourself a real big favour and make the inquiry!!!

I recommend Anchorage Marine Underwriting, 199 Pacific Hwy, North Sydney 02 9959 4422.

Speak to Greg Fullerton. He is brisk in his manner and gets to the point but he knows Tops Hats well and will give better rates than the major insurers and - usually - without any hassles. A lady yachtie friend bought a 40 footer through a Pittwater broker and handed over a cheque for insurance cover with Anchorage. Within a day or so her sailing master (?) took the boat offshore in very strong winds and lost the rig. When she lodged a claim with Anchorage the cheque was still lying on the desk in the brokers office. Anchorage paid up without hesitation.
Give Greg a call, tell him you have a Top Hat and all doors will open unto you!

Talk to NRMA, they accepted an inwater survey for my Mk 1.

As with Phillip, I'm with NRMA and they only need an inwater survey which is much cheaper. It still includes rig as well, as far as I can see.

Unless you can get something with Anchorage.

Well after a lot of mucking around, GIO have agreed to renew my comprehensive insurance for another year without another out of water survey.

For info I have paid $338 to insure for $15000. NRMA wanted about $650 (even though I have other policies with them) and Club Marine would not take it on without a fresh out of water survey. This seems to be the best value for money that I can find, but I'm interested to know if others are doing better elsewhere?

If we were all really smart, we would self insure as a group. Would that be too hard to set up and administer? 50 Top Hat owners (how many are there?) paying $300 a year...$15000..we could survive one total loss per year. Food for thought?

Hi Bruce, I am with RACV Insurance in Victoria. My premium is $493.50 without an out of water survey.

The group self insurance idea has some merit.
Obviously it would not be able to cover any 3rd party liability, that would still have to be covered by the individual.
But the saving on having to get expensive surveys could make it worthwhile.
But what happens if there is two or three losses in the one year?
