Hi Everyone,

Starting to get Wigwam ready for her first overnight offshore jaunt - the target is to sail from Sydney to Newcastle & back (with a stop over for some light refreshments in Newie!!!)

Does anyone have any suggestions on the following:

- Best way to design/install Lee Cloths (I don't have a table in my MK 1)

- Suggestions for keeping water out of the cabin in heavier seas. I have 2 fibreglass Hatchboards that seem quite awkward to put in and out (not to mention the top one self locks when in place!!!)

- Appreciate any other suggestions to do with safety, comfort or speed :-)

Cheers
Gavin

Gavin,

Just the question I was about to ask re the hatchboards in Mk 1's.

I am thinking of doing what was done on the Mk2's as the two standard boards
of the Mk1 are not for offshore sailing. I am also looking at some kind of canvas flap
if it is raining as I have no dogger as yet. There was a Mk2 with one of these flaps for
sale on boatpoint some time ago. I'll see if I still have the image and will post in on the board.

I have just had the misfortune to have to replace my propellor, involved slipping and removing rudder, as the previous owner provided no catalithic protection, prop went pink as the zinc was leached out of the bronze. But with the new prop, a clean bottom and the flat Camden Haven River I did 6+ Knots, but Seaka seemed to be happier at 4 knots. (I have a 10hp Nanni).

Hi Phillip,

I was having similar thoughts regarding some sort of Canvas flap... would be interested in seeing any pics of how people have 'rigged them up'.

A dogger would be nice, although I wonder if it would limit visibility too much...??! (i borrowed this pic from boatpoint)

Out of interest, what was done on the MK II's?

Gavin,

I've attached a photo, also from BP, of that flap

The flap should be easier to add to a Mk 1 because of the deck overhang. It is needed when it rains!

The doggers are all one offs so there are variations.
I will see if John's (anchored next to me) dogger can be photographed to show the construction of his variation.

Looked at my hatch today and almost decided to chop up the existing fibreglass ones to fit, but decided to start from scratch in timber. I'll do a drawing this week and post it.

Thanks Philip,

I was doing some reading on another forum, and there were people discussing the idea of making washboards from 9mm perspex - the dark, tinted kind...

Apparently it's easy to work with and has the added advantage of being virtually maintenance free, durable as well as looking very presentable...

http://groups.msn.com/compass2829yachts ... ssage=6769

might be an idea...

Gavin,

I have just uploaded a file in the "How to do things" on leecloths that may help you.

Still working on a solution for the hatch, should have something next week.

Gavin,

I have worked out what I am going to do to the Mk1 hatch.

From the bottom hatch I'm going to cut a portion off, 225mm deep from the top,
and add two more of the closing latches to the bottom portion.

From the top hatch I'm going to remove 320mm from the bottom and add two
more closing latches to the bottom portion.

I will waterproof the two new joints with two SS strips like that existing.

Cost ? about $20 max I hope, will only have to buy the SS.
I looked at all sorts of alternatives but this method seems to be the most easy
and cost effective. Won't change the look either!

I've attached a photo showing the above.

Gavin,

I CHICKENED OUT!

What I did was to construct another hatch that went to the top of the seats. I have yet to apply a coat of flowcoat to this to finish it off (will include a colour.)

To house the original two hatches I constructed frame work inside my starb'd locker to hold them.

I will be going out to SEAKA on Tuesday and will take some photos (forgot the camera today) to post.
