*^&&$# insurance

Postby Killick69 » Mon Dec 19, 2011 5:38 pm

I recall someone having difficulty getting insurance some time back, I have had a very frustrating day trying to arrange insurance for my boat (due 30 Dec). Have not yet been able to find one that does not need at least and in-water condition report. The underwriters of my policy that is about to expire are no longer insuring boats. Anyone know of insurers not requiring one to hop the hoops? Anyone know surveyor/shipwright that can provide condition report/survey in-water in the Brooklyn or surrounding area?

John,

I am jumping through the same hoops, I have a surveyor coming down to Parsley bay on Thursday......not cheap, but must be done otherwise no one will insure you. PM me and I will pass on the details, he might be able to fit you in

I got some mob in Queensland, GIO or Suncorp, I'll find out tonight for ya. I only got third party up to 20mil cost me $90 p/a . I figure I can loose my boat okay but if I had to pay for someone elses that'd kill me.

G'Day,
From another post earlier;

These are the insurance forms and the information you may need to supply, ie when the rigging was done last, how old the engine is etc. I hope it helps.

Insurance - a necessary evil.

I have comprehensive insurance with Club Marine. I just paid my renewal for 2012; $480for $20,000 cover. Club Marine insist on an out-of-water survey every 5 yrs for 'old' boats. They do however, give you over a year's notice that it will be required(gives you time to stuff the piggy bank a little). Storm Petrel's next survey is due before next December and I figure I will get it done when she is out for her annual anti-foul next November.

I think all insurers would insist on an initial survey before covering an old boat. Keep us informed of how you get on.

Cheers

I recommend Anchorage Marine Underwriting, 199 Pacific Hwy, North Sydney 02 9959 4422.

Speak to Greg Fullerton. He is brisk in his manner and gets to the point but he knows Tops Hats well and will give better rates than the major insurers and - usually - without any hassles. A lady yachtie friend bought a 40 footer through a Pittwater broker and handed over a cheque for insurance cover with Anchorage. Within a day or so her sailing master (?) took the boat offshore in very strong winds and lost the rig. When she lodged a claim with Anchorage the cheque was still lying on the desk in the brokers office. Anchorage paid up without hesitation.
Give Greg a call, tell him you have a Top Hat and all doors will open unto you!

If Gramps suggestion doesn't get you anywhere, I have mine with NRMA. They do require an on water inspection, and will cover your rig with conditions, and give you $20mil Public Liability. I think my premium was about $450 for a year.

Good luck!
