Renaming a Top Hat

Renaming a Top Hat

Postby TimothyH » Sun Jul 17, 2011 5:56 pm

Has anyone renamed their Top Hat, and is there a particular ceremony for Mark Ones?

There are some very interesting ceremonies listed on the net, and I'm sure there will be some very interesting replies on this forum, no doubt involving copious amounts of champagne or such like. But please let me know if you have any advice (could be a mistake..!)

Cheers

Hi Tim, How you doing? Sorry can't help with naming procedure, but if you do decide to go ahead, will bring a bottle of champagne or whatever.

Just make sure you remove all evidence of the original name from the boat before you offer the ceremony. Also, don't forget to offer the champagne to both Posiedon and Neptune!

Perhaps do it at the next sail away:-)

Oh yeah, and you have to take her out of the water to remove the old name and rename her before she goes back in and christened. And I heard that they should be out of the water for at least three months. And if all goes well and the Gods smile upon you maybe then your life will remain moderately unchanged. Then again you could just let sleeping dogs lie.

Hi Tim
I like this one

Old Boat Renaming Protocol

Take the old name off the boat. Gather friends. You will need enough glasses for each person present, plus one. You will need two rounds of drinks for each person present, plus one.

Take the boat out of the harbour and clear of the entrance. Stop. Go into reverse. You can do this by motor, it is classier to do it by sail. Pour the first round of drinks. The boat owner holds a glass in each hand. One drink is the first drink poured from the bottle. As the boat backs up, the owner makes a small speech thanking the gods of wind and water for their kindness to <old name of boat>. All present drink a toast to 'old name of boat'. The owner throws the first drink (downwind) into the wind and water, and down the contents of the other glass.

Now put the boat into forward and pour the second round. The boat owner asks the gods of wind and water to be kind to 'new name of boat'. All toast 'new name of boat', and the owner tosses the first drink (downwind) to the gods of wind and water.

Now you have the permission of the gods of wind and water to change the name, but it is more easily done ashore, esp. after 2 drinks.

This is how I was told how it should be done .

You will need to turn the coin in the mast over three times plus one for every year the Top Hat has had the name it's got now ! This must be done while your Top Hat faces South. I presume your Top Hat doesn't have a figure head so you will need a topless female to stand on the bow in it's place . :D Then you can toast Huey (god of weather ) with rum and bitter lemon (mutton bird )
If your mates are tight arr..! you can use the old Visitors Beer (VB)
This must be done with no women on board except for the figure head .
I hope this helps

Bear :D
PS JUST ADD MORE TOPLESS WOMEN FOR MK 1s

What happens if the skipper / owner is female?

Hi Diana

Yep you got the Bear this time ! I have one idea but Huey might not like it ? But, with a name like "SEA LADY " you should never have to worry ! :D

This is why :

1: Women on board a yacht makes the sea angry

2: A naked woman on board will calm the sea.

3: This is the reason for naked figureheads.

Why do I think I'm in trouble ? Mr Greg HELP !!!!! :o

Bear

Hey Diana why not put a figurehead on your "sea lady" will keep Huey happy !......won't it ?

Thanks Bear,

I do have a figurehead of sorts on Sea Lady.
See photo.
And have no intention of changing the name.

So by your reckoning I should always have a female crew and we should always sail naked?

Or should, considering I am a female skipper, have all male naked crew.
Certainly possible. :P

Perhaps Mother Nature outranks King Neptune.
She certainly outranked King Canute!!
