I have recently purchased a Mk3 and am wondering if anybody could give me suggestions/comments on fitting the outboard motor to the transom in lieu of having it in the well.

G'day Darned, I have one in a well which pulls up on a stainless tube
structure so it clears the well hole itself. You canthen plug the well.
Putting it on the transom would require a transom outboard bracket anbd
probably a longer leg on the outboard. Consider how it will steer with the
prop further back away from the rudder. They don't steer well in reverse
even through the well let alone on a bracket back another couple of feet.
When I first saw the well I wasn't that impressed, but with a plus with
drain holes)the cockpit drains through the well also) the well can be
blocket for safety reasons.
Hope that helps

I too have the motor in the outboard well and find it is handy and safe and does not cause noticeable drag. The motor is a 8hp extra long shaft Tohatsu and only just fits.
I can lift it up on a piece of wood athwarts and it almost clears the water to reduce drag further.
Hope this helps.

Whitworths Marine have a 316 stainless steel bracket rated to 25 hp. It costs over $300 but looks very solid.. I intend to install one soon on my Mk3 to replace the rather flimsy bracket mounted on the starboard side. I intend to mount it in the centre to use it if needed under sail.

Recently joined the group as a Top Hat Mk II (a) owner, I would love to see some pics of the assembly you have for raising the outboard out of the well. Does a short leg outboard work with these yachts ?
