Hi

The surveyor who surveyed my Top Hat indicated "The rudder stock upper bearing guide tube is worn which allows water ingress between tube and stock when underway (by motor only, not when under sail).."

This is indeed what happens.

Has any one had the same problem with their Top Hat and if so was it a difficult job to get fixed.

I will be slipping next Friday 8th Aug and will have an engineer take a look at it. It would be handy to be clewed up with some prior knowlege before I get the engineer's assessment.

Regards

Dave

Dave

I think I have the same problem - same symptoms - a shipwright told me the
same thing about my boat a few years ago. I've done nothing except run the
bilge pump after motoring - nothing is getting in while sailing or on the
mooring. Look forward to a solution,
Rob

Thanks for the response Rob,

I'll let you know the outcome of the engineers assessment when my boat is slipped next week.

Regards,

Dave

Rob and other interested parties,

My boat is now back in the water - the problem of water entering the cockpit through the rudder stock tube has now been rectified - what we did was:

1. raise the rudder about 12 mm to allow more of the rudder stock to protrude above the bottom of the cockpit - this was achieved by fitting a larger packing gland around the bottom of the rudder stock (beneath the rudder).

2. fitting a packing gland with 2 "O" rings inside (around the top of the rudder stock ) beneath the base of the tiller - the packing gland was bolted and sealed (using a sealing compound) to the bottom of the cockpit.

Hope this will help if you ever decide to fix the similar problem you have with your boat.

Regards

Dave
