replacing an inboard propeller

Hi all
it has been confirmed that my 2 blades propeller had drop off .
I 'm kind of know where about it 'd came off, :)
what should I do now :?
call a diver to look for it,or time to replace a 3 blades prop.(could give me more boat speed)

I need some advice on --
who do I call that does the diving for the prop & refitting services?
or where to pick up a new or 2nd hands prop--- 2 blades or 3 blades?
how much does it cost?

Hi Phillip,

I just replaced my three blade prop for a 2 blade. When I removed the propeller i noticed that the key had suffered from a little bit of electrolysis it had only been in the water just over twelve months. Needless to say I have now fitted an anode to the hull and shaft.

Now as for a new propeller, I have a 3 blade 13.5 x 15 LH complete with propspeed, I found it was too over pitched for my tiny 10hp Volvo, was good for about 4kts and about 1/2 throttle, any more and it was just black smoke for no increase in rpm or boat speed, your more than welcome to have it if it suits your boat

Just noticed your prop is RH, don't think the 3 blade will be much good to you

i highly doubt, given the amount of current through that area with the tides etc that a diver would find the prop. better to put the $ towards buying a new prop

freak occurrence that it came off, but we pretty much knew it at the time.. better than a gear box problem i guess, at least $ wise

hi Dan,
you are right, it's better cost wise being the prop then the gear box :oops: the old prop looked quite tired from the photo.it's time due for a new one :)

my old 2 blade prop could only do 5 knots on 4/5 throttle & no more even on full throttle.
in the SOLE Diesel motor handbook shown it came with a 3 blade prop.
that make me think that a 3 blade prop may give me more speed :?:

Hi Philip,

The advantage of a two blade prop is that it has less drag when you are sailing. If you want to keep your boat speed up in light airs, a folding or feathering prop (e.g. a Kiwi prop) would be the way to go. But if you are just after more boat speed under motor, then the simplest and cheapest way to go is with a fixed prop(two blade if you are after sailing speed). However, you do need to be sure that the prop is matched to your engine. If the donk is old it may prefer a prop with less pitch. I think I would talk to the current dealer of your motor or a marine engineer about the correct prop to get.

P h i l i p,

I have a MK 1 and replaced the 3 blade prop in 06 for $575, mind you my prop is inside the rudder as normal.
There are posts from about that time regarding props. I have a 10hp Nanni.

I feel that what little drag there is in a 3 blade prop is more than made up when you have to motor-sail.
I have spoken to a lot of coastal cruisers up here on the mid north coast (NSW) and most say that they motor-sail for up to 60% of the time!

Also as a diver, I think you would be very lucky to get your prop back, unless you can say that the sea bed where you lost it, is of a hard type and not mud.

Kiwiprops cost $1975.00 :o
fixed 3 blade prop $ 550-650 from propellers wearhouse.
fixed 2 blade coat :?:
plus fitting cost :oops: :roll:
have to see the bank manager for that :)
but I don't do any races, for now.

I've found the handbook of my 10hp SOLE diesel motor.
there 's information of the importer- Headland Engineering at Brookvile,
I'd gave him a call, George was very helpful,
2 blade fix $520+gst
2blade folding prop $1291+gst
he'll sent me more informations incl. the drawing of the HT on the off center prop set ups.
wait & see.

Porter props are very good they have done alot of Top Hats and Swansons over the years .I change the prop on my Mk1 Egret II from a 2 blade for a 3 blade to ease the cavitation .
