plotting GPS routes onto google maps

Hi Everyone

Just a little something to satisfy the gadget side of sailing, and for a bit of fun......

I was out with a friend on Saturday who saved off our route and buy submitting the GPX file to this site
http://www.gpsvisualizer.com

gave me a link to the day's activities:
http://www.everytrail.com/view_trip.php?trip_id=486154

What's cool is that you can see the stats by hovering anywhere on the route and vice versa.

Would be cool if google maps gave you the wind speed and direction as an overlay so you could see your route in relation to the wind from the comfort of your home! :geek:

Anyway, a nice cruisey day on Pittwater, stopping for lunch in the Basin, circling a sea plane just off Barrenjoey lighthouse, before heading back to Clareville.

Was the first time my sailing buddy had been on a tophat and he was thoroughly impressed. Another convert! :D

Good morning Dean and Lisa,

What a find! I also noticed that you can add photos to the trip.

Will use this next time I sail.

Will post any trips in Top Hat Voyages.

I liked that 360 just before mooring!

That's excellent, I have been doing something similar with my Magellan software, but this is definitely easier to share.

Thanks for the tip.

360 degrees before heading back to the mooring?! Must be a glitch in the software!!

......ahem, yes I'm afraid I've still got my P plates

I was also thinking what would be great for the site is having some kind of feature where we give the co-ords of where our boat lives and this gets overlaid on a google map or something like that.
Could expand this to include photos so it would be easy to see who's situated where, and know what the boat looks like.

Sounds cool, but not sure how difficult it would be.

I'll get my coat......
:D

Here's one of mine:

I like the everytrail site, I have been recording every trip and saving it to my laptop, but this allows us to share any interesting trips we do.

Fantastic.
