Hi everyone,

Looking at buying a Top Hat Mk1 for my first boat. New to sailing but pretty well addicted. I have spotted one and am viewing her next week and Ill get her surveyed if I decide to go further. From the info I have they seem to be a good choice for a first boat. I have looked at Endavours, Sonata, Pacific 747 but have deicded on a TH. What I am hoping for is some info on the maintenance costs for a Top Hat. How much should i bidget for an a per annum basis for anti fouling and general maint?? Thanks for your help and hope to see you on the water!

Duncan.

Hi Duncan. We purchased our TH Mk 1 6 mths ago with knowing that it would be needing the "routine" yacht maintaince soon. Well the time came 6 weeks ago. One week prior I scrubbed the hull with a rubber broom ( in 6 ft of water ) . The Mk 1 draws 4ft3. We then slipped her and had the hull pressure blastered. A day of sanding and preparing well is the key. We applied 2 coates of International Micron extra self polishing antifoul and 6 coats on the prop after a coat of bronze etch primer. The a/f costs around A$ 180.00 for 4 litres .We used 6. Obviously slipping fees will be different from Marina to Marina. Antifouling is usually done annually. I am at present painting the top deck. Firstly with a marine undercoat/primer and then 2 coats of International "Brightside" deck finish. There are 2 photos on the "photo" page of this site. "Evangelia". Good luck with your purchase.
