I consider I am doing well if I average 5 knots and cover 40 nautical miles in a day. However, fast sailing boats can certainly do some distance.

In 24 hours, François Gabart logged 785 miles at an average of 32.7 knots.

And if you are wondering, it was not in a Tophat 25.

That's neat.... I'd love a big Tri just for travelling the coast at a good speed. Trouble is, there are very few with the volume required to live comfortably, unless you go for +40 foot. Good thing about multi's, if they go over you've got a platform to sit on until you get rescued

Michael. Have you seen the red proa off the west side of Scotland island? It's fast & has loads of room. They outdo many cats & tris speed wise.

Doing 32 knots is double the speed I go in my aluminium dinghy and 9.8 hp outboard. Doesn't take much chop and it bashes too hard so I slow down. How rough would it get in those fast trimarans or catamarans that travel the big blue at 20 or 30 knots?

Woodsy, yes, I've seen Gaias Dream. Never seen it actually sailing, but would love to. It's a fascinating design and looks quite practical, though like a lot of the bigger boats in Pittwater, it never seems to go anywhere. At least not that I've seen.

Inni , the owner & designer/builder now lives in McCarrs ck. On land. He skippers a lot of vessels locally. You'll find a lot of info on his YouTube clips. A kit proa I like is "Madness''. Too small for a long cruise but great for coastal jumps.
