Good-bye Bmtrouble

Just bought a 2007 Yanmar 10 hp for $4000 has 20 hours on the clock only used on a Sunday by a little old Lady. Not to sure about the "Little old lady 'bit ? But.. it sounds good ?
The old D7 went for a service as it wouldn't accelerate under load ,it would only do 3 knts a bit like a D7 bulldozer does same speed up hill as down hill ? Anyway it is fixable problem just the labour is the killer . It worked out cheaper to buy the Yanmah, and cheaper than an outboard in the long run. The funny thing about the BMW as it is worth $1000 as a working motor ,says the mechanic ,But if I sell it as bit's and pieces I can get twice as much for it eg; manifold $200 gear box Hutz $1000 fuel pump $120 etc . At least now my motor problems have gone .

Cheers Bear

Good to hear Bear, now you can go out alone, without having to have another Top Hat to tow you :D

Hope it goes in easily and works as advertised!

From my little experience, I quite like the Yanmar motors. The 10 hp one I had I found quite easy to service and basically simple to look after. One with such low hours should last a lifetime, so long as it has been looked after and not been underwater or something. Hopefully you will be able to get more than 3 knts out of it. At least 3.9 or even 4 knts. : )

Hi Bear,
Your motor is a 1GM10? 8.5-9hp I gather. I picked up a 1GM10 as a reliable/more powerful/newer replacement for the Volvo.
A couple of factors I'm taking into account:
Fortunately Volvo & Yanmar rotate in the same direction.
The Volvo revved out at 2250rpm, the Yanmar 3600rpm, so I'm not sure if the same prop can be used.
When I had Pelagian out for antifoul I checked the prop which seems to be ok for the Yanmar - about recommended diameter & pitch (maybe it was the wrong size for the Volvo).
Are you swapping the engine's over, or having it done?
I'd be interested to hear - might sail Pelagian up for the motor swap as Batemans Bay doesn't have much choice in the way of marine engineers/shipwrights.

Cheers, Rod

Hi Rod

I'm having some luck with this engine! It's a R/H prop and my prop and tail shaft are fine and better still the couplings match. :D
I'm fitting it myself, and the Yanmar is easy as the centre line of the tail shaft runs at the same height as the underside of the engine brackets. So I've made a dummy plywood box (which represents the engine) with the coupling holes drilled in at the back off the box The underside of the box represents the bottom of the engine brackets. So all I have to do is bolt the box to the tail shaft, line up the box square with the tail shaft and mark the existing engine beds and bolt new hardwood engine blocks to the old engine beds at 60mm or more below the line which is the height of the engine mounts .And then slide the new engine into position and bolt it off ?
The BMW D7 which is 6hp handle the 3 bladed prop OK . which is a Porter prop ,and fills the whole cavity behind the keel with about 4mm clearance , so it's atight fit and seems to help with cavitation.

cheers Bear

Mr Greg suggested we should share the towing now to save on fuel ?

Good news Bear, and I shall happily steal your information and insights! My interim fix was an OBM bolted on the back of Pelagian, so I've been able to tow myself around... Or is that push myself around

Rod, I had a mental breakdown and thought about planting and outboard on Egret ll ?But sitting in the cockpit with a beer watching yachts around me with outboards made me come to my senses ! the smell of 2 stroke would always reminds me to mow the lawns ?

Hi Bear,
I exchanged a bloody minded dubya for a Yanmar 10 on another boat and it slipped right in with only a minor adjustment of the engine beds. If you must have an inboard, the Yanmar is the best marine engine, purpose built and easily serviced from the front of the motor. You have every reason to be pleased with yourself mate, you got it for less than half the price of a new 10! :D

At least having the temporary Honda 4 stroke OBM I can pretend I'm on a ride-on mower...
