What is this for??

I discovered the other day that there is a compartment between the Port side cockpit locker and the compartment under the seat in the cabin on the port side. I you put your hand into the storage compartment on the port side, you will find it ends inside the cabin. The cockpit locker does not extend this far. So, there is a compartment about 10 inches long. It is not completely sealed, as the vertical section in the cockpit end is unfinished at the top outboard corner (a triangular hole about 1inch across). It obviously is not a watertight compartment and I doubt it is structural (the compartment on the starboard side is open from the seat at the dinette right through to the stern). It is a mark 3 and I was wondering if other boats have this compartment and does anyone know why it is there. I am tempted to use a hole saw and make an inspection hole. Alternatively a mall inspection camera could be useful. Perhaps this compartment is there to channel water from the headlining into the bilge, although I am not aware of any holes in the compartment that would allow water to flow into the bilge. Cheers, John

Hi Killick ,

Between what you are trying to explain , and what I have suggested in about Outboard versions of Mk1s , it seems more photographic illustrations are required .

All the best ,

Are you talking about the gap between the cabin liner and the outer cabin skin?

Let me have another go at trying to explain my question. There is a compartment (storage space) under the seat in the cabin on the port side. One would assume this runs through and meets up with the forward end of the cockpit locker on the port side. However, they do not meet. Instead there is an inaccessible compartment about 10 inches long which sits between them and is about in line with the companionway. In summary, on ports side in line with the companionway there is a compartment which is inaccessible sitting between the cockpit locker and the storage compartment under the bunk on the port side. Hope this makes sense.
