Hi all
Looking at getting back into a bit of coastal cruising & on a budget & can't seem to go past a Top Hat.
Sick of sailing around cans on cats & found a cheapie mk11 but has or had mast compression probs
Has normal steel mast base on cabin & standard compression posts inside the cabin
but looks like it has dropped approx 0.5 to 1cm & enough to cause buckling in the toilet fibreglass wall which runs parrallel to the boat
Has had repairs to the problem or problems
Has had inner roof lining removed foward of mast bulkhead to front hatch & reinforced with 5x glassed timber strips approx 5x5cm thick
Maybe a rotton deck combing from water?
A peice of aluminium plate 13mm thick i&50cm wide is placed on the bulkhead at roof height in the front cabin & bolted through the bulkhead & into both compression posts & glassed in which is under the mast base.

Have tossed around some ideas as to why ?
Timber compression posts are rotton in bottom where glassed to hull or maybe were a poor fit & bogged in then glassed over & bog has given way ?
Packing under mast base plate between cabin roof & posts rotten from maybe water ?
Sideways movement of mast base from sag causing downward pressure to move to one side maybe starbord as toilet wall buckled?
Incorrect sidestay adjustment ?
Maybe extreme knockdown or backstay giving way down wind?
Anyway was wondering if anyone else has come across this prob & is it a fixible thing or is it just best to keep looking ?
Cheers Adam

Just had a thought back letting go would take downward pressure off

Adam,

There are plenty of Top Hat's for sale.

Get one that has not got those rare problems!
