Who has an adjustable backstay?

I saw one that on a really tidy tophat recently and thought I wonder if it can be added to a standard rig or if needs to be set up specifically for it. It was a simple tensioner on the split backstays - not hydraulic or anything.

Do you have one on yours, is it worthwhile for cruising? How did it enhance performance?

Hi
I had a fiddle block (4:1) onto a 2 :1 giving me 8:1. I have added a further 2:1 giving me 16:1. when tensioned on going up wind it decreases the amount of sag in the fore stay, This gives a noticeable improve in pointing. I then release downwind which gives a small increase in top half main depth and give a fuller headsail.
cheers
Phil

Hi Phil

Do you reckon it is possible to add something similiar to a standard set up without too much stress... I would like to try it but not sure whether it would add additional stress or if the rigging should be altered to allow for it.

I can't see why not but am a bit concerned I might be overlooking something...

Thanks

Karl
