And I thought the stationary waves when heading out through the channel at little box were bad. I would hate to have had to negotiate that bar with a 14HP diesel.

He mentioned Westport as an alternative, so I reckon that's the Greymouth Bar on the West Coast of the South Island, New Zealand. The town seen in the last frames certainly looks like Greymouth.
We get smaller ones at the Forster Bar [inside the walls] on an ebbing tide, especially if its a 1.5m + tide.
With the Wallace Lakes behind the tide you must only enter on an ebbing tide if you can do 10+ knots.
