Its very quiet!

Pete - knocking the poop off Marinka was a pleasure... what 'til you see what job I have lined up for you on Solitude on our next sail, you any good at unblocking heads? Ha ha.

Everyone knows that red is the fastest colour:

Light travels at a constant speed in vaccum... 3 x 10^8 m/s...
But in media like air, glass, different wavelengths in the electromagnetic spectrum travel at different speeds.
Refractive Index n is inversely proportional to wavelength of light.
But refractive index = Speed of light in Vaccum/Speed of light in medium
Hence, speed of light in media is directly proportional to wavelength...
Since wavelength increases from Violet to Red,
Red travels the fastest...
Violet travels the slowest..

Hi Top Hatters

Boy My Top Hat "Egret II" is just plain white!!! :( But White light is all of the colours of light combined within the visible light spectrum. When white light is separated through a prism, we see the visible light spectrum. The various wavelengths of visible light separate into colours. In turn, when these wavelengths are combined proportionately, we see white light :? So white must be faster  Again I'm only a bear ! :o

After all that discussion on the fastest colour, one has to ponder...... what is the speed of dark? Karl? Anyone?

We have this discussion on my motorcyle forum about once every three months. We've all determined there, on the road, Black is the fastest colour, Silver is the most inconspicuous, Red is slow, because the rider is usually too busy looking at himself in the mirrors and white, well white is for those people who would really like beige, but don't want people to know how boring they really are :o

Duck egg blue, is neither fast, nor slow, it's just blue....... :D

Speed of dark is easy:

Darkness is the absence of light. There is no speed of darkness.

I guess you could say that darkness "arrives" when light departs. So the speed that light "leaves" the observed space would be the speed of darkness; meaning the speed of darkness would be the speed of light, about 3.00 × 108 m/s.

I used red anti-foul this year so I suppose I'll be faster than anybody

I have a PhD in physics so I am wisely staying well clear of this argument about the relationship between a Tophat's colour and its maximum velocity. Seems to me there may be quite a few other variables that might be more important (blast, I said I would stay out of this).

I reckon by my observations that it depends if you are sailing towards or away from the Sun.
Remember those things like a little wind mill in a light globe glass that was evacuated. You would put them in the sun and they had a black surface on one side and white surface on the other. The white surface would reflect photons off the surface and the black surface would absorb them. It would then rotate at about 60 to 200 rpm.
Therefore, if a white boat and black boat are sailing away from the sun the white one will sail faster than the black boat (or a dark blue one). Sorry Dennis.

Alas a radiometer is not driven by photon pressure (which is minuscule) but by the change in air density in front of the hotter black surface compared to the air density near the cooler light surface. In
a breeze I don't think this effect will give you much lift.

this thread is hilarious- just have to join in. as a past member of the Institute of Automotive Mechanical Engineers, I and every hothod owner know that red only works effectively if used correctly- if you paint a car red all over the FASTNESS is applied in every direction so there is no benefit. this is why discerning hoons in the past only ever painted their diffs red. This pushes the car to a greater speed. therefore to get speed out of your tophat you should only paint the transom red. this could be why the poor manitou can't keep up- no transom!!!

BTW I am an old fart with roller reefing front and back, genny and main and I love getting both sails up and shutting INBOARD engine off while the go fast set are still barking orders to the crew!! :D oh as for the last post maybe red antifoul can help with lift and get a tophat on the plane- anybody have red antifoul who can comment
