Hi Philllip,

The dress code at the CYC is casual (jeans and t-shirt OK but no thongs or singlets). Will you be sailing down on Saturday morning too? With stiff a SW wind pedicted it could be slow a bumby ride down, but a quick trip back on Sunday. We might leave earlier than 10am if the wind is more westerly early.

Cheers,
Mark

Hi David (Peppercorn)
Will be good to meet you, if you come up from Pt Hacking.

Mark,
Yes Phillip will sail from Broken bay to Syd with me on NightCap, we are driving down & will be onboard before dark fri. Moored at Palm beach.
We are open to leave earlier on sat if winds are better to do so, will PM you my ph#, if you decide to leave earlier than 10am at lighthouse, pls give us a quick call or on VHF.
Im no wetherman, but at this stage winds look good, low over tassie is weakening & should dissapate as it moves SE, high strenghtens over SA & moves E, so it looks like 15-18kts W early, moving to SW 15kts by lunch. Sun 15kts SW turning SSW later. (source bom & seabreeze).
Miker, will also email or PM you ph# , to let us know if you decide to sail out to meet us on way back to Broken bay Sun, so we can keep eye out for you.
cheers
shaun

ps ive filled out CYC visiting yacht form & will fax it, should cost $35 if they charge us by the foot or $41 if they decide to charge the minimum charge. Thats if we decide to stay there, will go with the flow.

G'day Shaun,

Look forward to seeing you on Sunday around 10am. I will give you a call if we decide to set off any earlier. I agree that the weather looks fine at this stage. We still intend to stay at the CYC and return on Sunday.

Cheers,
Mark

All

The weather does not look to be co-operating for an enjoyable weekend, particularly for those sailing down from the north:

Sydney Coastal Waters, Broken Bay to Port Hacking and 60nm seawards:
Strong Wind Warning for Saturday.
Friday until midnight: Wind: West to northwesterly 5 to 10 knots becoming northwesterly 10 to 15 knots around midday then tending west to northwesterly 15 to 20 knots by early evening.Sea: Below 1 metre increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres by early evening then increasing to 2 metres later in the evening.Swell: Southerly about 1 metre. Chance isolated thunderstorms.
Saturday: Wind: West to southwesterly 20 to 30 knots tending south to southwesterly 20 to 25 knots during the afternoon then decreasing to 15 to 20 knots later in the evening.Sea: 1.5 to 2 metres increasing to 3 metres around dawn then decreasing to 2 metres later in the evening.Swell: Southerly about 2 metres.
Sunday: Wind: South to southwesterly 15 to 20 knots decreasing to 10 to 15 knots during the morning then tending south to southeasterly up to 10 knots during the evening

Perhaps its best to reschedule?

Hi All,

Storm Petrel will probably still go down to Sydney tomorrow unless the forcast worsens further. We quite enjoy a bit of breeze.

Cheers,
Mark

Gday,
NightCap will also sail to the harbour unless forecast gets any worse, i suspect the 30kt end would be further offshore, but i'll see how it looks tomo morning & decide from then. My main concern is getting into a pen at the CYC, but in closed waters should be a lot calmer & the forecast is almost idyllic at this stage for closed waters :
www.bom.gov.au :UPDATED

Sydney Closed Waters, Pittwater, Port Jackson and Botany Bay:
Friday until midnight: Wind:West to northwesterly 5 to 10 knots. Waters:Smooth to slight.
Saturday: Wind:West to northwesterly about 15 knots tending west to southwesterly 15 to 20 knots around dawn then tending south to southwesterly 10 to 15 knots during the afternoon. Winds west to southwesterly later in the evening. Waters:Slight to choppy.
Sunday: Wind: West to southwesterly 10 to 15 knots decreasing below 10 knots during the morning then tending south to southwesterly during the afternoon. Winds light during the evening.

In any case im leaving now for the drive down hoping to get across to the basin tonight & if dont go to the harbour will be around pittwater/Hawkesbury until mon morning.

See you on the water
cheers
Shaun

Hi All,

Back safe and sound to Pretty Beach. Great night at the CYC and wonderful value for $35. Thanks for the chocolate treats and home brew on the your $500 Top Hat David - you lucky bugger!

Only three Top Hats (My lot on Strom Petrel, Keith on Swift), David on Peppercorn and Dan by car) made it but we had a good time. Shaun had to turn back to Pittwater on Saturday at Newport after splitting his main on the way down. It was very good of him to bring Nightcap out to greet us when we returned to Pittwater this afternoon. The trip down against a 25+ knot SSW was a tough/wet one and took us 51/2 hours head to head. A much easier run home with the wind 15 knots from the south but with messy 2m seas.

Now I just have to figure out where that bloody leak is below my anchor locker and why I had half a bucket of water in the bilge(for the first time) when we got back this afternoon.

See you at the next Top Hat Get together.

Cheers,
Mark

Hi Mark when i had a tow in at Port Stephens in 5 to 6 mrt seas a few years back after we got in and went below our bilge was full even though she was fully locked up then when i was back in Broken bay i dried the bilge out totaly and could see a weep coming from the bottom of the bilge i thought it was the join in the keel.
Also while i was up in Port Stephens i decided it was a great opportunity to test the storm sails out as storm force westerlies came through and was beating into the waves out the back near lemon tree passage it was great fun but when i lifted the hatches on the forward berth it was full of water it had put a crack in the glass on the lower bow section it must have flexed while working hit the hard spot of the berth and cracked, if you look at all endeavour 24 and 26 they all have ribs in the bow section, it is a huge weakness in the standard production built top hats i feel i have read that one circumnavigater in a top hat had to do repairs to his bow also,i have seen custom fit out top hats that have fixed this problem and put stringers in down near the water line
cheers William

Hi All

It was good to meet fellow Top Hatters at the CYC. What a nice casual place to stay so close to the city! One tip for anyone who stays there in future, there is a Top Hat moored on a for and aft mooring on the most western side of the marina, don't go around this boat as I discovered that it is on the edge of a sand bank. Fortunately David was already at the CYC to lend a hand pulling Swift off. Thanks David !

In the big photo below you can see the three top hat's in amongst the big boys at the CYC Swift is on the left. The other two photos are of David s famous $500 yacht Peppercorn and Marks Storm Petrel (blue deck)

Cheers
Keith
