Sailed on a Swanson 38 with a cutter rig works well nice to sail and well balanced.
Cutter rigs on Top Hats why ??.The rig Top Hats have now works well ,in fact it's worked since day one .

Evening All,

I have posted the article on the Slutter rig :D .

You will find it on the Home site in GALLERY, Gallery No 4 - Various Files - page 2 as Slutter rig.pdf
It is loaded as a pdf, so right click and then copy or open then save.

Hi Fellow Top Hatters [without inner forestays] :D

This inner forestay stuff could somebody do a ' please explain' why in the hell would you want a inner forestay on aTop Hat .The rig in the Top Hat is well designed and balanced in both light or heavy conditions. And if condition are that bad and you can't wind in your furler to a hanky ,or like me being "old fashioned" and change headsails down a size or smaller and reef before that stuff hits the fan. There should be no need for an inner forestay as most storm sails are fitted to the main front stay. Why? because Top Hats don't have and don't need an inner forestay.Oh timber Top Hats had an inner forestay because they had a double spreader rig and I don't think, no I'm certain their storm jib goes where mine goes on the main stay why? because I don't have an inner forestay. In fact this post I have written dosn't make any sense either just like having an inner forestay on a Top Hat

....in a cryptic kind of way :D , (Phil you must be good at crosswords  )

Hi Bear, whats the second half of when you say "And if condition are that bad and you can't wind in your furler to a hanky ," ? , I wonder what folks do when hit by a strong unexpected consistent squall or front(at night, so you cant see it coming), & they cant wind in their furler for some reason?

cheers
Shaun
ps, I dont have a furler, just interested.

G'day All,

I always thought it was good practice to reduce sail at night. I have been hit by a couple of >35 knots squally changes and while a bit tricky, I could still managed to roll the furler down to hanky size. Depending on sea conditions you can either luff up or run with the breeze (to use the main to shadow the headsail and to reduce the apparent wind strength), while you adjust the furler. The sails are not that big on a Tophat and consequently do not exert ridiculously large forces and torques.

Might get a chance to try it again this week as we will be sailing Strom Petrel down to Sydney for a short visit to the CYC again early next week (weather permitting).

Cheers,
Mark
