I had to correct something I said in my earlier post. I misquoted Eric Hiscock. He recommended that the combined strength of the shrouds on one side of the boat be at least 30% greater than the boat weight. So for a Top Hat each shroud should have a breaking strain above 1.1 Tonne. 5mm wire greatly exceeds this. Even 4mm exceeds it, which is presumably why Contessa 26s (and Chunderguts' Top Hat) made in the 1970s used 5/32 inch (4mm) wire for the lower shrouds.

Ok,
I have 6mm fore and back stays with a Loo's tension of 34+
Shrouds are 5mm with a loo's tension of 28+

our old rig was 3/16 which we think may had been on the boat since new. Our rigger recommended the upgrade on the plan that we were going to sail in bass strait alot.
