Hi All,

What sized outboards are everyone using.

I have recently purchased "Solitude" a MkIII - which I believe used to belong to a member of this group...

It currently has a 9.9hp Four stroke on it - which I am considering replacing with something smaller... and that can be removed from the boat and used on a tender etc without needs either a crane or anabolic steriods. It is however a good outboard and does a great job so I may also consider leaving it status quo... still trying to work out the best way of doing this... I would like to use the back of the pushpit for a "bimbo" seat, so would liek to reclaim a bit of the space.

I know a lot of people swear by oversized motors when I had my endeavour I got rid of the 8hp and associated weight and went with a 4hp it made zero difference... once you are at hull speed you are at hull speed it actually ran better, I would prefer a motor sitting on 1/2 speed than carboning plugs up at low speed or pushing unneccesarily...

I would love to hear what everyone else is using meanwhile I will start weights training at the local gym in case the current situation is the most suitable.

Also not sure if there is anyone else in the Brissy Sunshine coast area with a tophat looking to cruise in company at some stage down the track we spent last night - our maiden voyage - at Tangalooma - and loved the way the tophat handled. Would love to catch up with others around interested in doing similiar.

Cheers

Karl

Hi Karl

Congratulations on the new purchase - I have a MK1 "Wigwam" with a tohatsu 9.9 outboard... have been in windy/coppy situations that I couldn't imagine getting out of with anything less powerful.

I guess it depends on the sea/wind conditions that you will find yourself in.

Enjoy!!

Cheers
Gavin

Hi karl
I have a 9.8 Tohatsu 2 stroke. Weight about 25kg, fits in the well. Cost about $2000 new. I generally operate on 2/3 power.

Hi all - thanks for the feedback.

I am looking at a Yamaha 8hp.

Just about all manufacturers are making the 8hps and 6hps out of the same block so they weigh about the same 26kgs, fairly standard for Merc / Mariner, Yamaha, Tohatsu etc.

However the 9.9s and 15 hp are normally also the same block and weigh low 40 something kgs.

I don't think I will miss 1.9hp and once at hull speed it makes no difference anyhow.

It does mean I can reclaim the cockpit and store it on a bracket on the pushpit and remove the pulley system etc from the cockpit - next thing is to work out the dimensions of the initial engine bay cover.

Once again I would appreciate any feedback

Cheers

Karl

Hi Everyone,
The drawing for the original cold moulded Top Hat shows a 3hp Watermota inboard but I went for the powerful 4.5hp Suzuki when I first started sailing Tales. (Mk III)
It worked fine getting on and off the swing mooring and it could fit into the cockpit locker!
It did not have a generator however so I upgraded to a mighty 6hp fourstroke Suzuki which does and is quieter and cleaner smelling.
The performance was enhanced when I did the sums on a Prop Calculator (from the web) and ended up with a 6" pitch prop (optional fitting) and now the full or nearly full range of throttle can be used. Previously no advantage to open throttle over half way so not developing anywhere near 6hp.
Tales will cruise at 5kts in no wind at less than 1/3 throttle and bash into a decent wind/wave for manuvering but not as much at 20kts.
Unfortunately the weight is about 25kg but when not in the well I clamp it onto (what is fast becoming known as) the bimbo seat!
Cheers,
Tom

I have just purchased a new Yamaha 8hp, it is a long shaft - not that I need one but standard with the long shaft is a "Dual Thrust" prop etc, kinds like 4wd setting when down low apparently...

Same weight as the 6, and I am looking forward to getting it out of the well when sailing.

Thanks for everyones feedback and info. I think I have actually gone a little larger than I perhaps needed to but with a charging loom it has a max output of 6a at ful throttle which was a lot more than anything else in similiar size...

Next step is to ebay the old motor... if anyone is interested in a 9.9 honda four stroke, and either is built like a weightlifter or happy to leave it in position - yell out :)

Cheers
