I am thinking about replacing my yamaha 8hp, attached to a undersized bracket, on the starboard side of the transom on my mk 3. I have never been happy with its performance in anything other than still water. I am thinking about a honda 8 (20 inch leg)or 10 horsepower (25 inch leg) 4 stroke relocated in the well. Alternatively, is it feasable to install a new diesel. I do not really need a bigger boat.

I would really appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks a lot.

PS has anybody seen the Compass site.
Will install some new pics when i work out logistics.

Does your 8hp fit in the cockpit well? I have a 8hp Tohatsu 25inch leg that only just fits, the prop is down far enough for all conditions though the 10hp I feel would have had just that bit extra grunt .

i have an 8hp honda and it has plenty of 'grunt'. only use it for anchoring and pullinto marina, so 'grunt' not really needed, rest of the time i use the sails

I replaced my dodgy Evinrude 9.9 with a new Honda Extra long leg about 3 years ago and it has performed faultlessly. It was too big for the cockpit well, as was everything else above 6HP so I had a substantial transome bracket made. The 8, 10 and 15 HP models were physically the same size, so I went for the 15, as it has a starter motor and 10 amp alternator standard. I thought it was overkill at first but has proved a great safety measure when going into big swell in Moreton Bay, and I'm glad I opted for the extra power. The alternator is a good suplement for my solar panel when out for a week or more. The transom mount allows me to steer more easily out of my marina berth as well. As an extra bonus, the cockpit well gives access for cooling off the feet in summer!

Hi Glen,
Any chance of a picture of your transom mount?

About to replace my aging 9.9 Yamaha 4 stroke. Leaning towards Yamaha or Honda in a 4 stroke.

Appreciate any comments/advice you may offer. (was the dealer helpful?)
