Contacting other Top Hats

:idea:Following on from the discussions about the sailaway, just one other thing on social matters.
The cruising group at RMYC Port Hacking have a general call to all boats in the group. Matthew Flinders had a cat named Trim. If any one of the group wants to get in contact with anyone else in whatever port, or just to find out who is about, they call up on Ch 16 VHF.
An example of the call is;
"Trim Trim Trim this is Felicite Felicite Felicite on Ch16".
If someone wants to meet or contact them a reply goes like;
"Felicite this is Wind Warrior would you like to go to Ch 73?"
So they can then pass information on or meet up or whatever. You are under no obligation to return a reply. At least you know there is someone around.
Could I suggest then that we use "Formit" as a callsign, or something else we agree upon, as a callsign?
So say for the weekend of the 31st Oct if you sailed into Broken Bay, or any other port on thursday you could call up on Ch 16;
"Formit Formit Formit this is Felicite on Ch 16, over". etc.
What do you think?

Great idea Greg,

Do you think "Formit" could be misunderstood? I had a couple of other ideas, but they could also be boat names

Simply using Top Hat or, MadCap, or perhaps Tango Hotel Yankee (phonetic for THY - Top Hat Yachts)

Just some ideas, though I like Formit as well.

Contacting other Top Hats

Postby Phillip » Thu Sep 24, 2009 2:57 pm

Afternoon All,

I have been playing about with these ideas for some time.

FIRSTLY:

The Trim crew from Port Hacking also have a burgee. I have investigated getting one done for Top Hats.
The intial idea I used consisted of a black background and a white top hat (printed on both sides.)

The costing for 50 burgees will require orders for 30 at the quoted price of about $25+ each, posted to you.
With 30 orders, as a minimum, the cost of production would be covered and the others, when sold, will help pay for this site and other things such as prizes at sailaways etc.

SECONDLY:

We really need to find out how many Top Hats are out there. As most of you know, none of the Top Hats were numbered.

May I suggest we have an exercise (free burgee to the winner who finds the most??) to find all the Top Hats we can by taking the MSB rego number, vessels name, location and a low kb photo as proof.
This could be sent, if admin agrees, to admin for processing.
Access to any such list produced would only be avaliable through the members section or admin.

THIRDLY:

I would support the radio call for us as being TOP HATS,TOP HATS,TOP HATS this is etc etc
I think we would pick up on the name a lot quicker than formit and yes I meant Top Hats with an s.

I would welcome any suggestions or improvements to the above ideas. :D

I would be in for a burgee - and agree that "Top Hats" is the most logical call sign -

I am going to have to go and work harder on the missus and the crew to make it on 30/1 oct - sounds like you'll pull a good crowd! How many hours would it take to get to Barrenjoey in a nor east headwind from Botany do you reckon (I've usually waited for a southerly to go north, nor easter to go south as the limited coast hopping I've done has been on holidays under no time constraints - and I am also inherently lazy!

Brendan, Calm down, gentlemen don't sail to windward !!
We used to allow 6 hours motoring and 6 to 12 under sail for the trip from Broken bay to Pt Hacking.
That's too long for the weekend and the wife (believe me). Just catch the ferry and any one else just take the better half on a romantic picnic to The Basin.
Re: radio contact, Top Hats seems like a good callsign lets use that. As long as we know what it means.
Last Sunday I went to Toronto and we saw between four moorings a MK 1 then Mk3 another boat and a Mk2. There is something in the water here at Lake Mac that makes them breed.
I heard somewhere that 600 were made by Formit.
Should we do a mail drop for top hats? I think that would get out of control VERY fast. Particularly at The Basin. Lets just see how this goes.

Brendan, I just sailed Dulcamara from Little Manly to Careel Bay. From heads to heads was about 8 hours in a NE that seemed to be at about 15kts. The full story is under the Top Hat Voyages section. There was nothing gentlemanly about it, it was almost all to windward or under the iron sail.....

Top Hats is a good call sign, I'd also like a burgee.

As for mail drops, not a bad idea. In the Drummoyne area I know of at least 4, plus a whole bunch in Lane Cove River that don't appear to be members. (Apart from Dan of course)
