VANEGEAR

VANEGEAR

Postby rob.lovelace » Sun Jan 22, 2012 6:55 pm

I did a few searches and found nothing on vanes etc, I'm sure I've seen the topic before.
anyway.
Last year I played with an Aries and found it over steered and was heavy on the boat. Although it was an old gear and had heaps of backlash I still felt it was to heavy for the TopHat.

Has anyone used vanegear with success on a TopHat ? If so what make and model was used?

I'm leaning towards the Fleming basically because it's made just up the road from me, and they look as though they are well made and not so heavy. I used one last week on a 32' Nicholson but that bloody thing would steer herself without a vane easily. My TopHat is alot smaller and lighter and very responsive to the slightest movements of anything. Sail trim, helm, sea, and even shifting weight.

It's a rather large outlay for me and I'd hate to get it wrong.

Gday Rob,

Are you planning a long trip?

A friend installed a Fleming on a Northener 28, & has been happy with it, fairly easy installation & the remote adjustment seems well thought out, good quality unit.

cheers
