Advice on buying

Hello current members,

I am in the process of purchasing a top hat. The boat has a brand new 8hp Yamaha two stroke located in a well in the cockpit. The current owner has just added new upholstery. The head is under the forecastle berth which seems to offer more room in the "saloon".

She needs a bit of a tidy up, but nothing major. The sails seem OK; the deck could be repainted; the staunchions, pushpit and pullpit need about a days worth of attention; the top sides could do with a polish; the mast is OK but would want replacing if I was going off-shore too far.

The asking price is $19k and the vendor won't move on that. Is this ball-park?

Hi Mathew

Is this the one at the Gladesville Bridge Marina or the one at Attwells Boat Shed ? Nineteen Grand is about the asking price but they do vary. I just bought mine (my second Top Hat) for thirteen but it does need a bit of a tidy up! Price seems to depend on the condition of the interior and the level of equipment. Seeing it does not have the enclosed toilet (the space was usually made into a wet locker) you may find it inconvenient after a while, especially if you are using the vee berth for sleeping arrangements!! Give me an encolosed toilet anytime for convenience.

Why would you want to replace the rig if you were going offshore?

Regards

Paul

Thanks for your reply Paul,

It's the one at Attwells. Have you seen it?

What are your thoughts?

Thanks

Matthew

Welcome
I am relatively new in the Top Hat arena, however spent about 3 months deciding on which boat to purchase. Top Hats got my attention very quickly having owned a Farr 750 previously. I took delivery of mine yesterday
Regarding pricing, prices do seem to vary and condition plays a big part as does age of rigging, antifoul, number and condition of sails etc etc. I am not sure what model or year your boat is, howver I just purchased a MkII 1985, would be classed as fair to good condition, new rigging, Honda 8hp outboard, $18,000. Most boats need a 'tidy up', thats all part of putting your 'ownership stamp' on it.
Good luck and enjoy
