My new Junk Rig Top Hat

My new Junk Rig Top Hat

Gday,
I couldn't help myself..have just bought Bill's Junk Rig Top Hat "Blue Moon", this is the second Top Hat ive bought from Bill!.
Have read a little bit recently on the chinese junk rig, its a fascinating rig :) with many benefits.
This one ive just discovered is a Junkette rig, which is an apparent improvement on the standard junk.
She needs some work to get her sailable, like a new piece of timber that the mainsheet block attaches to the pushpit etc etc, but nothing dramatic.
She's also got an inboard diesel :? , not having owned an inboard before am hoping im not in for a whole new world of hurt..its an Arona 10hp according to the manual. Engine needs some basic maintenance like cleaning the fuel tank & filters etc, before ill be able to start it, but apparently it has started in the last few months so should be ok.

Congrats Shaun, so you are now the proud owner of 2 top hats and both of which I will be able to se when I am heading north, if I am correct in my assumptions? Interesting rig - see it is keel stepped. Looks good and I have also heard great things about junk rigs but yet to expereince. Have fun and enjoy, Cheers Peter

PS, is there any swing moorings available in your area if I get stuck and have to go back to work before I get to Mooloolaba? Cheers
Marinka

Hi Peter,

You can get a mooring at the Dunbogan Boat shed (phone 6559 9713).
They have weekly monthly and long term rates.
There is a new owner just moved in, very nice people, Andrew and Janet.
There are always moorngs available.

Three of us have private moorings in the same area. :D

Cheers,
8philip8, she's a Mk3. here's a few words about her from the previous owner viewtopic.php?f=12&t=256 . I'm really looking forward to sailing her, there are quite a few cruising yachts that have the junk rig & are great down wind. She also has a genoa, but no jib sheet track, so i'll have to fit some, i think maybe the sheet block was attached to the chainplate.
There is no stainless steel rigging at all, but there is provision to fit an upper shroud, if i think its warranted.
Peter, as Phil said there are always moorings available at Dunbogan, about a 10 min walk into town(Laurieton), you can also lock a dinghy up at the Dunbogan Boatshed, or alternatively there are a few pens available in the Fishermans co-op marina, Laurieton (where Blue Moon is in the photos), for $55 per week.
If you are just going to stay for a night or so in transit, good anchorage is just off the Serviceman's Club wharf, or on the wharf itself for free for a night or two.
Of the two choices a swing mooring at Dunbogan would be my pick, cheaper too.
cheers

Ive added a photo on the gallery page of the modified junk rig with the mainsail up.
