What's more important?

What's more important?

Aesthetics or functionality?

Our Dulcamara has always looked a bit tatty. Some would say even partially neglected. For me, this has always been a source of not shame, but of disappointment that I can never seem to find enough time to do what I'd really like to do to her.

Such things as a full re-furbish of the interior, including fitting a head liner which I've never had. Changing the red tartan cushion covers, changing the aging blue carpet that lines anything that's not tartan or timber. What about a full repaint of the hull, getting rid of the overly large sign-writing on the side and cleaning up the grey toe-rails.

On the plus side, she's pretty ship shape rigging wise, and while the sails are dirty and a bit out of shape, they're functional. In fact, as a functional weekender, she's pretty good. Longer distances may require some adjustments.

The thing I always say to those about us on moorings in Refuge Bay, or elsewhere..... "My view is the same as yours, it just didn't cost me as much" ;)

Couldn’t agree more Mike, but, I love doing bits and pieces to Seaka, as long as the SWMBO doesn’t find out how much I’m spending!!

Hi Miker, good to read your post.If you like owning your yacht and enjoy it then it is of no importance what others think.Perhaps too much focus on aesthetics may take away ones enjoyment of the hobby.Beware of keeping up with the Joneses. This is my first post in a long time.I still have my Tophat but have not done much travelling in it .This opens up a further discussion,do we need to sail our boat to enjoy it? I better sign of ,probably upset enough people for one post.Have fun mate.Cheers,John. ;)

HI Miker

This is my theory to the problem about refurb etc ? My Swansom was built as you know as a hull and deck 35 years ago and is still not finished ! :o So everytime I get a spare moment I do a little more ,a bit of trim a teak plug here a rub of oil here and there .If I keep doing this along with the annual maintenance I should never have to do a refurb as she will never get completed and I can hand her onto my son like my old man did to me ,so problem solved ?
I think enjoyment is more important !

I can't see how you'd upset anyone John. Although I don't see it as a hobby, more of part of my lifestyle. I see myself as a water person. I surf, swim and sail, and enjoy just being on the Manly Ferry or walking the shoreline. I also enjoy just laying on the coachroof doing nothing, so I don't think you have to sail anywhere to enjoy your boat. Nor do you have to continually work on them, unless it's something you enjoy. I enjoy some tasks, like varnishing and polishing, but crawling all the way down to the interior of the stern is something I'm almost past and will avoid it if I can.

Bear, I hear you. I don't really think anyone has truly "finished" their boat. Even those who buy new. A friend just bought a very large and expensive stinker, but he's already thinking about improvements and alterations, even though he spent over a $1/4 million.... He's quite happy to have a raft up with a tatty old Top Hat though, so long as we use his nice new, very large and non marking fenders.....

HI Mike
The good thing about our vintage  their will still be around in years to come when we are not. The refit on ours has it,s limits ,at least we can sand our teak and hand painted non slip gives them a personal loved look ?and boat carpet looks expensive and classy! The refit on a million dollar eye catcher is only peeling off artificial veneers and and up grading the decor ? Oh and hand painted non slip looks s@#%" on a million dollar gin palace

LONG LIVE THE 70's
