Hi All

Back to basic's,
Just thought I would ask what works best in a TH, with two crew(one in the water).
Figure 8 or Quick stop(tack,turn)??? :?:
As a safety procedure I like to apply the K.I.S.S to the rescue manoeuver.

The quickest way to stop a TH is to heave to.

We won a prize last year with MOB training beating all comers consistantly to pick up the life ring.

Just shove the tiller down and when it comes round (jib backed) lash the tiller to leeward, drift down and pick up.

Getting onboard is another matter however.

We rescued a girl from an upturned dinghy not long after that (squall came through) and she was a fair chunk of a girl. Took quite a bit for both of us to get her onboard.

Should have cut the lifelines and given her a rope with a loop in the end as she was able to help herself.

Ladder on the back is not the best as in any kind of a sea it will be leaping an plunging a fair bit.

Cheers,

Tom

Depends on wnd direction and where the MOB is with respect to the yacht. We have found that a quick tack ( tack without releasing the jib - ie keeping it backed) and then rounding up and releasing everything is pretty quick when beating. My boat is not keen to heave to if I have the no2 up, but with a working jib I agree that it will stop the boat quickly.

Looks like the "quick stop",quick tack, jib backed (all the same) works. Even Tom's Heave too is a variation of it.

Quite right Storm Petrel, I forgot to add that bit, sorry!
That is also what we do.
