I notice in the original article it says the men were dehydrated and exhausted. When you see the size of the esky you can understand why. The esky is huge and was full of beer so to increase the bouyancy they started drinking like mad. Going through that amount of beer was exhausting. Then, once the esky was empty and floating safe and high in the water, they had nothing more to drink so got dehydrated (all the beer they had drunk did not help either). Thus, dehydrated and exhausted.

The other problem was that all that peeing over the side of the esky after drinking the beer attracted the sharks.

Perhaps you could put a little lifejacket on each beer to give it positive buoyancy?

Very impressive Shaun. I presume it is a Type1 PDF to ensure the 'head' stays out of the water in the event of the contents only being partially consumed when the ship is abandoned, hence allowing the remainder to be put to good use while awaiting rescue.
